Dr. Filipa Samarra is a Research Specialist at the University of Iceland’s Research Centre in Vestmannaeyjar. She is a behavioural ecologist researching marine mammal social and foraging ecology, as well as acoustic communication. Her research focuses on intra-specific ecological and behavioural variations, interactions between species and the effects of environmental changes. Much of her work has been on killer whales and she is the founder of the Icelandic Orca Project, the longest-running dedicated research and monitoring programme on killer whales in Iceland. Her work also includes monitoring cetacean biodiversity more broadly and its changes over time in south Iceland, including work with pilot whales, humpback whales and blue whales. She engages in science outreach whenever possible and is particularly interested in the interface between science and art.
