Liisa Kanerva

Liisa Kanerva is a visual artist from Finland, currently based in Norway. Her artistic practice covers several techniques, from paintings and installations to architektons. However, the very base of her works is always drawing.

Liisa’s artworks are figurative. Characters in them are animals and some human-animal hybrids. For a long time, the basic theme in her art has been the relationship between humans and animals. In recent years, her focus has been more and more on population changes of sea animals and birds. Liisa’s works have been seen in galleries in Finland and abroad, in some art museums in Finland and the mediaeval halls of the Turku Castle.

Since the year 2000, Liisa has concentrated on her artistic work, but actually, she began her career as a visual artist in the 1970s. In the 1980s, she got an architect degree at the University of Oulu in Finland and, after that, had post-graduate studies at the University of Florence in Italy. Later, she completed further studies on the ideas of Italian Renaissance architects in Rome and got a PhD degree in the history of architecture in Finland. She is a docent of the history of architecture at Aalto University, Helsinki.
